In the last few weeks we've seen a number of big names admit that the GenAI and LLM buzz was just hype.
The CEO of Amazon Web Services said that replacing entry-level staff with AI was the "dumbest thing I've ever heard". He backs up what we've been saying for months. If you don't allow people to be entry level, how will you ever get senior level staff?
Unfortunately, that's the short-sighted nature of many businesses. They focus on the right now and completely ignore the long-term effects of those right-now decisions.
The CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, has frozen almost all hiring for AI positions within his companies.
Even Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has said he believes we've been in an AI bubble.
Take a moment to let that sink in... The people who went bonkers trying to convince you that their AI was the future are now capitulating and admitting it was all about hyping for money.
If you followed the story of the Tea and Tea on Her apps, you'll see the dangers of "vibe coding." While not certain, clues were discovered that strongly suggest these apps were "written" by someone without any knowledge of software development or application security and using Generative AI. They were also built to verify users by requiring very sensitive information. That sensitive information has now been stolen.
Fortunately, none of our clients went crazy trying to integrate GenAI and LLMs into their workflows. We had a few who wanted to dip their toes in it, though. There's nothing wrong with that. We've tried it internally with mixed, but mostly disappointing, results. Be curious but cautious with new technologies. Don't dive in head first. The pool may be shallower than it appears.
The lesson learned here is to not believe the marketing hype. Be skeptical of those in your LinkedIn feed who are trying to make it look like the answer to all of humanity's problems. We have too many folks in our world who are just smart enough to be dangerous. Many will buy into the hype for fear of missing out on the next big thing.
Remember this the next time the hype machine spins up.
Consider their motivations, and the motivations of the Zuckerbergs and the Altmans of the world. What do they have to gain and lose from this hype? If that doesn't align with your values and desires, move along.
Don't be one of the lemmings who drives their business over the cliff because they were blindly following everyone else.
