Law enforcement around the world continues to increase the number of cyber attacker take-downs.
We don't always see these because of all the other crazy things happening in the world and, perhaps, the shock of seeing these no longer gets the ratings that news outlets so desperately want.
However, they are still happening.
We are seeing the prosecution of teen hackers from the UK who cause havoc across that country. Why they carried out cyber attacks against their own country from within it is still a mystery. That's just like walking up to prison and asking to be let in.
Ransomware groups are starting to feel the wrath of the previously apathetic governments who allowed them to attack so long as it was directed outward at adversarial countries. Ransomware groups are also feeling the sting from victims being tired of paying out large sums of money. The numbers of those attacks are in decline.
Scam compounds in Southeast Asia are also being raided and the enslaved workers are being freed. Some countries are carrying out very harsh sentences against the kingpins of these operations.
Does this mean that cyber attacks are over? Unfortunately, no. We must continue being vigilant. As long as there are ways to subvert the system, there will be people out there who want to break things and hurt people. It's more about human culture than the technology or anything else.
Even if we fixed all the technical flaws in every piece of software in use today, there are still people who can be duped into doing something that is against their best interest. We like to highlight these events to show you that there are others out there helping in your defenses and that hope is not lost.
So take a minute to celebrate the small wins but continue to strengthen your resolve and your defenses against the attackers who are still out there and yet to come.
