Tips for Staying Safe After Google Cyberattack

Sullivan Wright Technologies co-founder and partner Chris Wright joined KATV’s Little Rock ARC, a daily lifestyle show, to discuss the fallout of a large-scale cyberattack affecting Google. During the segment, Chris explained what actually happened and tips to help consumers and businesses protect their data in the immediate aftermath and from future incidents. The full segment is available here, with excerpts below.

A recent cyberattack has affected Google, Alliance Health, and Farmers Insurance, and consumers are still feeling the effects. Chris Wright of Sullivan Wright Technologies explained that the breach is due to a previously unknown threat actor targeting the Salesforce ecosystem.

"It's actually an attack on the Salesforce ecosystem," Wright said. "Not necessarily Google itself, but Google data by hitting their Salesforce instance.”

Wright emphasized the importance of businesses verifying the security of their data through vendor management. "One of the things a lot of larger businesses do is they'll have a concept called vendor management, which involves assessing how vendors protect data through questionnaires, assessments and ongoing monitoring.”

For consumers, Wright advised caution when signing up for services. "The more services you sign up for, the more, what we call surface area of attack, that you have as an individual," he said. He recommended providing only the minimum required information when signing up for services to reduce the risk of data breaches.

Wright also highlighted the importance of considering security assessments, such as SOC 2 and HIPAA compliance indicators, when evaluating how companies protect consumer data. "Look for those kinds of indicators that say they're doing testing on their own system," he said.
